Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
Once again, questions have been raised about the health system in the state. The memories of the Medinipur Medical College saline incident are still fresh when a similar event occurred at Burdwan Medical College Hospital. Late on Monday night, eight pregnant women fell ill shortly after taking medicine. Their families panicked, and a team of doctors quickly took charge of the situation.
After initial treatment, all patients' conditions were reported to be stable. According to sources, around 10 women admitted to the gynecology department of the hospital were given medicine by the nurses on Monday evening. Within about an hour of taking the medicine, eight women’s health started deteriorating. Some developed high fever, others started losing consciousness, while others complained of cramps and convulsions. The families immediately informed the doctors.
Seeing the situation worsening, the nurses also called the doctors. A team of doctors immediately began an investigation and tried to stabilize the women by administering other medicines. After about an hour of effort, the patients' conditions began to improve. The Superintendent of Burdwan Medical College Hospital, Tapas Ghosh, stated on Tuesday that this incident occurred after the doctors' ward round on Monday evening. Preliminary investigations suggest a side effect of the medication as the cause.
Currently, all patients are stable, and a thorough investigation will be conducted. The hospital administration has decided to send the medicines involved in the incident for testing. It is worth mentioning that just a few weeks ago, at Medinipur Medical College, after administering Ringer Lactate saline, one woman died, and four others became seriously ill. That incident raised questions about the state’s health system. Now, this incident at Burdwan has raised similar concerns. The Burdwan Medical College Hospital management has ordered an investigation, and the patients' conditions are being closely monitored.
